The Great Katie Taylor – song

shane_supple_006Katie Taylor Irish Sportsperson of the year 2012 well deserved . This is a song written and recorded at home just after I watched the fight on tv.  I was watching the fight listening to Jimmy McGee and I was just carried away so while it was re running I grabbed my guitar and wrote this song , not much time or thought went into it it was pure emotion and just saying what I felt at the time.

I got an old a tape recorder, hooked up a mic and while the TV was playing in the background I just recorded it.

One day I may go into studio and do it right but for now this was just raw emotion and joy at a great win for a fantastic lady representing ireland at the very top of her game. Its meant as a tribute and compliment to a great inspiration, Katie Taylor. Its rough and ready but it captures the spirit of the occasion. Gold winner at the olympics and 5 times world Champion Katie Taylor.

The Great Katie Taylor
Words & Music by Shane Supple

I sat and cried, my heart filled with pride when the winner was announced today.
With Jimmy Magee I watched my tv, held my breath as I waited to see.
It was close in the end 8 points to 10, the winner was the girl in all red
Katie Taylor they cried, our olympic pride when she won gold in 2012

The roof, it lifted, when Katie gifted a right cross and left hook again
Another point on the board, another great score the Russian just had to give in.
The cold war was done, for Russia’s number 1, she couldn’t defend on that day.
For there in her way on that faithful day stood brave Katie right up to the end

I sat home and watched great scenes unfold, I felt my dispair lift away.
With God on her side and a million Irish eyes she took all our troubles away.
When she won, well Gods only son, must have stood guard in her corner that day.
Alongside her father, Peter her coach. The brave Katie Taylor was great.

Every street it was quite, throughout the whole fight,Ireland was glued to the tv.
You’d think it was planned, they went mad in the land, from North, South the East & the West
206, was the world country list, but Katie topped them all on that day.
At 11 she said, the gold was her aim and in London that dream, it was made.

Oh what a scene Amhrán na bhFiann and the Irish flag rasied highest that day.
When in London 012, that brave Irish girl claimed gold and a place in our dreams.
All around the world, they joined in the chorus in there millions they all had to say.
Katie Taylor they shouted, voices in the thousands bring back the gold to old Bray.

I sat home and watched the great scenes unfold, I felt my dispair lift away.
With God on her side and a million Irish eyes she took all our troubles away.
And then when she won, well Gods only son, must have stood guard in her corner that day.
Alongside her father, Peter her coach, the brave Katie Taylor was great.
Yes,the brave Katie Taylor was great.
Yes, the brave Katie Taylor was great.
