On Friday the 3rd of December next the Lady Belle, in Dungarvan sees the first visit of the touring band Spirit Riders from Dublin. During the week I spoke with a of laid back talented musician Alan Begley one of the founding members of this six piece band.
Alan started by explaining the line up of the band , Satch Wright from Nashville on electric lead guitar and vocals with Col Griffith from Dublin on bass guitar, Cian O Callaghan from the rebel county , Cork providing a steady rhythm on drums. Joe Ryan on pedal steel guitar and Graham Nolan on fiddle and keyboards backing vocals and rounding off with Alan Begley himself, on guitar and vocals.
It started off in 1985 when two friends Satch from Nashville and Al from Dublin met up at a song writer’s night and start playing together. They have been together since on and off having a lot of fun hanging out and playing in bars and honky-tonks’s time moved on they decide some new blood was needed so Al convinced old friend Col to come on board to play bass, Things started to move along swiftly they started doing a few gigs then Satch who knew this pedal steel player Joe Ryan from way back and this drummer Cian O Callaghan from Cork contacted the lads and invited them on board then in 2009 Col who knew keyboard player Graham Nolan invited him to the party to complete the line up of the band. The lads play stuff that’s a mix of original material and American country music all with there own unique style.
Spirit Riders are a Dublin based alternative, country urban, twang six piece band that play a mixed set of originals and old-school country rock. As Alan said himself during our conversation “We try to keep it real and as straight forward as possible. Our natural habitat would be pubs & clubs but we have played and were well received at a couple of festivals which we loved, we have no ambitions other than trying to earn a living and are not trying to look or sound like anyone else. We enjoy being ourselves.
It seems these guys just want to play music and have a lot of fun in there own unique way. What makes this bunch of guys a little different to other bands is that some of the band members are in their 60’s, which means there is a huge amount of experience and skill to fall back on while performing live. You can catch this band online and listen in to some of the live tracks and sweet laid back tracks at reverbnation.com or myspace.com or even facebook.
